Fr. Eduardo Vitoria inagurates the Laboratorio Químico del Ebro in Roquetes (Tarragona).

1911
Appearance of Fr. Vitoria's book entitled "Chemical Catalysis", the first work on this subject in Spanish language.

1912
Appears of Fr. Vitoria's book entitled "Chemical practice for chairs and laboratories", which for many years was the book of reference in different Chemistry Teaching Centres.

1916
The Laboratorio Químico del Ebrois transferred to Barcelona and takes the name "Instituto Químico de Sarrià."

Foundation of the Association of Former IQS Students. Appearance of the first issue of the journal Afinidad, initially designed as the association's newsletter.

1924
Fr. Vitoria is invited to give some lecture at the Universities of Buenos Aires and La Plata (Argentina).

1927
Fr. Vitoria publishes his best-known book: "The Chemistry of Carbon", a true innovation in the teaching of Organic Chemistry.

1932
IQS must leave its headquarters because of the decree dissolving the Society of Jesus. It assumes the name "Centro de Estudios Químicos" and operates initially in Pomaret street and thereafter in Anglí street. Its Director is Mr Juan José Muñoz. This Centro de Estudios Químicos closes its doors in 1936, on the outbreak of the Civil War.

1939
When Civil War finishes, IQS opens again its doors under the direction of Fr. Salvador Gil.

 

1955
1955
A solemn act in homage to Fr. Vitoria is held in the occasion of turning 90 years of age and 50 of the foundation of the Laboratorio Químico del Ebro; IQS is visited by numerous personalities from the European academic world; an exhibition on the Chemical Industry and the first exhibition of Spanish books in chemistry are held. Fr. Vitoria is awarded the governmental Gold Medal of the Work.

1956
Fr. Sanz Burata sends the initial idea of a Board of Industries collaborating with IQS. This Board is formally established in 1958.

1957
For health reasons, Fr. Salvador Gil gives up IQS directorship, that is assumed by Fr. Pedro Ferrer Pi.

1958
Fr. Eduardo Vitoria and Fr. Salvador Gil die within the space of two months.

1959
Opening of the High Pressure Plant, funded by the government of the German Federal Republic.

 

1961

1960
Opening of a Pilot Plant for studies in Chemical Engineering. IQS is visited by General Franco.

1961
The United States Government awards the Institute a considerable grant for instrumentation. The subject Numerical and Graphical Calculation Methods is introduced in the university curriculum; this fact represents a newness in the studies of that moment.

1962
Introduction in the curriculum of an obligatory End of Studies Project. Also, in occasion of the arrival of the instrumentation, the subject Electronics is also included in the curriculum, being the IQS the first chemical faculty in Spain to take this step.

1963
Technical Services bureau to the Industry is created.

1964
Doctorate studies are introduced.

1965
The Ministry of Education recognizes IQS as a private Faculty of Higher Technical Education.

1966
The Biology Laboratory becomes part of IQS.

1967
An IBM 1130 computer is installed at IQS, and so it becomes the first University faculty in Spain using Computers in chemical research.

1970
Fr. Ferrer Pi is appointed Rector of the University of Deusto and Fr. Miquel Montagut becomes Director of IQS.

1980
Definitive approval, on the part of Education Ministry, of the IQS curriculum to obtain the title of Industrial Chemical Engineer.

 

1984

1984
IQS ceases to be legally dependent on the Society of Jesus and becomes a Foundation, governed by a Board of Trustees.

1985
Fr. Miquel Montagut retires and Dr. Miquel Gassiot becomes Director of IQS, the first layman in acceding to this position.

1991
The Parliament of Catalonia approves the creation of Ramon Llull University (URL), of what the IQS becomes a part; our Institute also creates the Faculty of Economics (Business Administration).

1994
Dr. Miquel Gassiot is appointed Rector of URL and leaves the position of IQS Director. He is succeeded by Dr. Enric Julià.

1997
His Majesty the King Juan Carlos I lays the first stone of the multimedia rooms and for this reason visits the IQS facilities.
The same year is inaugurated the Environmental Laboratory for dioxins analysis in emissions and foodstuffs; this Laboratory is the only credited one of its kind in Spain.

1998
The Board of Trustees approves "La Misión", the official book containing the IQS ideology. In the same year, the Director of IQS promotes the creation of the ISJACHEM association, that brings together all Chemistry University Faculties created by the Society of Jesus; it is intended to encourage exchange among them and to support universities in countries with developing economies.

1999
Prof. Federico Mayor Zaragoza, Director of UNESCO, inaugurates the multimedia rooms.

2000
Industrial Engineering courses begin.

 

2001

2001
In Rome, Pope John Paul II beatifies Francesc Castelló, a former student of the Institute; IQS becomes the first Higher Education Faculty of the Society of Jesus to have among the Beatified one of its Graduates.

2002
The IQS Faculty of Economics incorporates the EMI Center of Studies.

2003
Opening of the building that accommodates the Materials Laboratory.

2004
IQS Chemical Engineering courses are recognised by the US accreditation agency ABET. This development provides for our students exchanges between IQS and similar Faculties of Engineering in the United States.

 

2005

2005
IQS signs a collaboration agreement with the MIT of Cambridge (MA) that will provide for the exchange of teachers and students between the two Centers.

The IQS Museum is inaugurated and a plaque commemorating the Centenary of IQS is placed at the old building of Laboratorio Químico del Ebro in Roquetes (Tarragona).

The IQS Centenary acts begin with the laying of the first stone of the Bioengineering building by the Minister of Universities, Hon. Carles Solà.

IQS is awarded the City Gold Medal granted by City Council of Barcelona, and the Cross of Saint George granted by the Government of Catalonia.

2006
Different acts are held to mark the Centenary of IQS. They close in July with the presence of and a lecture by Father Peter Hans Kolvenbach, General Superior of the Society of Jesus.

2007
IQS School of Economics courses are recognized by the US accreditation agency AACSB.

Teaching and research activity in the Bioengineering building is inaugurated.
